Grade II Listed Springfield House in Leeds given green light as part of purpose-built student accommodation scheme

McLaren Property set to deliver 334-bed PBSA development neighbouring Leeds university campuses

The City Plans Panel of Leeds City Council has approved the redevelopment of Springfield House to deliver a 334-bed purpose built student accommodation scheme, centred around the refurbishment and conversion of the Grade II Listed Springfield House. Delivered by McLaren Property, the leading residential and student accommodation developer, the scheme will sit in mature landscaped grounds and stands adjacent to the University of Leeds campus.

The development, designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects, places the refurbished Springfield House at the heart of the scheme. The Grade II building will be the main entrance to the development and will house the wide range of amenity and support services for the purpose-built student accommodation, including a gym and wellness area, study spaces, games room and entertaining kitchen/dining spaces, both internally and in private courtyards.

The refurbished Springfield House will be complemented by two new wings which will provide best-in-class student accommodation, delivering 140 studios and 194 cluster bedrooms, benefiting from private landscaped courtyards, extensive communal amenity, cycle provision and study spaces.

McLaren Property’s regional managing director Tom Gilman comments:

We are really excited to bring forward this scheme and thrilled to have received support from Plans Panel members. We have worked diligently with our design team and Leeds City Council to ensure Springfield House will deliver best-in-class student accommodation, whilst sympathetically centre around the Grade ll listed building. The scheme is in a prime location situated adjacent to the University. We look forward to progressing to the construction phase and regenerating this site.

The Springfield House scheme is designed to support the health and wellbeing of residents and targets BREEAM Excellent and EPC A, through a highly efficient building design and services. There will be generous green landscaped space, with the retention of all the existing trees as well as planting of new trees. Its central location provides good transport links and there is integrated cycle storage.

McLaren Property has a strong pipeline of developments within the city of Leeds, with a capital value of c£700 million, including the recently approved Wellington Square, a mixed-use development incorporating 464 build-to-rent homes, delivered by McLaren Living and 364,000 sq ft commercial space.
